Although
most film releases on DVD now come with the occasional deleted
scenes included, Secondhand Lions fans are spoiled by no less
than 10 deleted scenes , including the original alternate
ending to the film ! And just when you thought that could
not be topped, every deleted scene comes with a Director's
Commentary by Tim McCanlies as well !
These
are not outtakes, but scenes that Tim McCanlies edited out
from the film for pacing reasons, and they are important because
they all add just that little more information about the McCann
Brothers and young Walter to make us care a little more about
them. That additional background information often adds to
the richness of the story, and these deleted scenes are as
enjoyable as any other part of the film !
Walter's
First Fantasy ( 1 minute 22 seconds )
In this deleted scene, we take a look
inside Walter's mind, and it is the first scene which gives
us a glimpse as to how wild this young boy's imagination is,
an imagination that will serve him well years later when he
becomes a successful cartoonist.

First
Day Alternate Edit ( 7 minutes 32 seconds )
This
extended alternate edit of Walter's first day with his uncles
included quite a few amusing scenes which did not make it
into the final edit of the film, but did appear in the theatrical
trailer.

It
also included Walter's second fantasy , important, as we have
mentioned earlier, to show Walter's wild imagination even
though outwardly he was this scared little fellow.

The
True Story of the Salesmen ( 3 minutes 53 seconds )
Why do so many salesmen drive by the McCann homestead day
after day only to be shot at ? We learn the real reason
behind this mystery in this important deleted scene.

More
Helen and the Santa Suit ( 3 minutes 53 seconds )
This
deleted scene features a subplot revolving around a Santa
suit which was dropped altogether from the final film for
pacing reasons.

Burying
Santa ( 2 minutes 2 seconds )
This
short scene expands on the deleted subplot of the Santa suit
...

The
Sheik Rewind ( 1 minute 40 seconds )
Another
very nice scene that takes us into Walter's head and gives
us a glimpse of his fertile imagination !
Mouse
over
Battle
on Horseback ( 1 minute 3 seconds )
This
short but exciting scene was cut again for pacing reasons,
but its deletion caused a continuity problem in the final
edit of the film , because it was this scene which showed
how the evil Sheik got his scar on his right cheek.
Corn,
Corn , Corn ( 5 minutes 9 seconds )
This
wonderful deleted segment has so many interesting scenes !
From an extremely tender scene between Walter and his uncle
Hub ....

.....
to a hilarious and inventive scene on what Walter and his
Uncles did with all that extra corn that they couldn't eat.....

Mouse
over
.....
and a wonderful, wonderful scene where we see young
Walter's delight in realising that he is growing up !

We
enjoyed this "growing up" scene so much that it
was the inspiration for our "Haley
Grows Up" feature over at our companion website,
"A
Boy Called Haley".
Alternate
May and Stan ( 5 minutes 5 seconds )
This
is an alternate edit of the scene when Walter's mother, May,
and her new boyfriend, Stan, return to try to get Walter to
reveal where his uncles had stashed away their untold wealth.

The
10th and final deleted scene is actually the entire original
ending of Secondhand Lions , but it is such an important
scene, we gave it a section all its own !
